I don't know why my post isn't here, even though I could've sworn I posted, but...

Why does it matter, maybe they like dressing the way they do, maybe they like their style. Honestly it makes no difference to me.

I don't get why you guys care so much about how people like to dress or look, if its not so inappropriate.
DWells55 wrote:Here's my question: why bother dressing like that? It's just a bunch of extra effort for nothing. There's nothing wrong with normal socially acceptable clothing. There's no need to alienate yourself from the rest of the population. There's a lot of goth/emo kids that are really creepy, so dressing like that is going to make people think that way about you. Yeah, it's an unfair judgment, but it's also human nature for the most part.
Why do women bother spending as much time on themselves as they do? Because they choose to. Its not all about being like everyone else, maybe some people like their style, and they don't care if other people like it. Other people have their style because they like it. So why can't Goths?

If you went back in time a fair bit, people would think your crazy for dressing the way you do. Large amounts of people dressing a new unique way makes new styles and trends. If people just tried to be like everyone else, nothing would change, maybe nothing should change, but maybe some want it to. Or maybe some just want to live their lives.

Today's society is all about fitting in, being like everyone else. If your like borat running around, people would not take you too seriously, you have to be this way, or this way, women need these body curves and need to be skinny. They can't be themselves as much as they want to, without feeling alienated.

If the world was more loose it would be a better place. In conclusion Dwells, I totally think your statement about alienation is bogus. Why not loosen up society, let people be more free? Let them be the way they would like to be? Why must they fit in to the way other people want them to be.

Person 1: I want to play this instrument.
Person 2: Wow, only homosexuals play that instrument.

The same thing goes on, and other people make you feel bad for being yourself. Just keep the style you want, as long as you don't get into trouble.

One of my friends.

Grew up around him, I'm use to him and his lifestyle.

But this is earth, people are intolerant of many things.

Intolerant to other human beings?

I know people that are just as intolerant to normal style as many of you are to Goths. Many of them have had a hard life that makes them feel horrible when they see other people being so happy and what society defines as "normal".

In the end you should just accept it, its not that bad... So you may not be friends with someone because you may not know them, may not like something about them, but it makes no reason for you to avoid them so much. Maybe you just shouldn't start a conversation with them, not totally avoid them.

I hope some people make sense out of that last statement.

Maybe he has a deep psychologic backing and reasoning for saying that, possibly something that happened when he was younger.

He's making a generalization that all people that fall under that stereotype are the same.

Can it be because they like how it looks?
I must've stumbled on an amazing theory there.
Why do they like how it looks?
Because it isn't accepted by society as it is filled with grossly-unneeded things.

Please tell me how you know goths dress for that reason. Or is this one of those "I know because I know" kinda things?

Nothing in that quote makes that claim.

I tend to wear a black fleece or dark green fleece but always wear black trousers does that make me goth?
No just means im comfortable with the way im dressed.
I listen to heavy rock bands metalica drowning pool and rammstein that make me goth?
No! just means i cannot stand "music" that sounds like a bunch of chipmonks performing the Christmas Carrol theme song or song like how some of the other songs are too soft or always bragging about how some half-cast shagged his past 18 ex's all in one week [or at once which ever comes first].
most rap, R&B and other songs like that either consist of singing like a canary thats just had a blow job about how hes shagged so many woment or talking about how their going to get pilled up.
I don't know about you but if i want to hear a song about love and the such il just listen to Du Hast by Rammstein.

I was just skimming through this topic and I found people associating Emo with cutting themselves and Goths worshipping satan.
Being depressed is...well...depression. You don't need to be depressed to wear 'Emo' clothes.
Same goes for Goths and Satan-worshipping. Satanists are somewhat of a religious group I guess =\ .

That's not necessarily true. Maybe they have a need to wear those types of clothes, because they feel it represents them, and they don't do it for attention. Or, it could be because they just like how said clothes look...not because society deems it unneeded, but JUST because they like the aesthetics of it...

Obviously I'm not speaking for everyone who wears any stereotypical style of clothing, ever, but I just don't like generalizing what I've seen in a whole group onto one person who seems to fit in that group. Of course there are some people who dress Gothic to get attention. But I personally just don't feel comfortable with instantly judging a person based on whatever group he seems to belong to. If everyone else wants to go ahead and do that, alright. I've made my case, and I won't.

My parents are VERY stereotypical, and yet my mom has said that some of the nicest kids she's ever known were goth (my sister's friends.) Most of my friends are goth, and not a single one worships satan. Hell, most of them worship God (being christian) anyways!
I'm just going to got flat out and say this... I hate goths... They are scary... They look rabid.
That's the idea. Goth's try to make a first impression of being like that. Try to get to know one and you will be suprised as hell.
Are you goth yourself, or are around goth people most of the time by any chance?
He doesn't even have to. You've completely blinded yourself with stereotypes like most people. Open your eyes, fool.

I know, I've never met a satanic goth, and I've run into a lot of them. A lot of them have the greatest personalities too.

It's pretty much just a fashion. Nothing more.

Indeed. Goth is the fashion. Not the action taken.

Its not like a huge clan you join where you need to cut yourself and etc. My friend dresses in the Goth fashion and is one of the funniest and most outgoing people I know, everyone likes his personality.

Its when people associate it with the rumors going around about those types of peoples.

Just like many Americans actually think we Canadians say 'eh' or 'aboot' and even some think we live in igloos. They are stereotypes set by rumors about maybe one person, or not a person at all, one may just hate that society and try to spread gossip and false rumors. People think Goths are satanic. I don't know one satanic goth. But I know a fair number of very nice and cool Goths, they aren't my friends, but they are hilarious and really nice and I hear good things about them.

this is what makes me hate them the ones at my school are like my life is so bad and really its not and my is worse and i don't go cry like a bitch or where tight pants cut my wrists
their copy cats most of them their older siblings did it so they do it and its stupid if your like sucks dress in your genders clothes and act like your life doesn't suck and have some fun and make it better
so mostly what makes me hate them is their life sucks because they make it that way and Halloween is a once a year excuse to look ridiculous not a year round thing

You can't do that veegie.
By giving a universal definition, you assume that everybody must be like that, creating a stereotype.
For anybody still wondering where FTD has gone, here it is.
