oh, china....
it's really sad to see so many people being misled. here, the chinese government is filtering out all incoming traffic to their nation and making sure it says what they want it to. for example, they block the sites google and wikipedia, and even halomods! that site i linked to up there let's you see if a domain name is blocked in china or not. my educated guess is that they have a very large whitelist they use to filter traffic.
anyways, what do you guys think?

exactly. i can see the point of view of the government not wanting anything to upset their people and cause a rebellion (i'd be worried too. an angry mob a billion strong, frankly, would scare the shit out of me). but such mass-censorship like this is wrong. sure, they could block sites of an enemy nation's government, but not letting your country access google or wikipedia and actually learn on their own is just terrible. i'm sure the US is censoring things, like websites run by terrorist or insurgent groups, but places where you can learn about the world around you, or even your own country?!?! absurd.Tural wrote:This is why their economics were bad in the past. They want to seal off outside influences, which really limits the amount of ideas and advancements within the country.

Actually China has it's own Google, Google China. And Wikipedia seems to be blocked and unblocked sporadically (it is blocked now).

Honestly there are much more important problems in China than this.

North Korea is just as bad, they block most international sites and they don't permit most books from other countries in as well. It's wierd though, because although North Koreans can take english in thier schools they don't know of any americana literature yet they all know american nursery ryhmes. Watch the documentary from ABC its true >_>

That's your own fault. We only have porn and game sites blocked, but that's understandable because we shouldn't really be on those anyways.Cuda wrote:A Communist country's censorship is bad? what about the censorship at our schools? we don't even have google Images. >_>
They did, however, block DeviantART...for nudity.
it's justifiable for schools to block sites, they pay for the connection between their network and the internet, and they don't want non-educational (often virus-laden) material in.
on the other hand, as i understand, even if you buy your own direct connection to the internet in china, they will block out anything they don't agree with. and north korea, as i understand, is worse. i'm not sure if they're connected to the world's internet - i'm fairly sure they have their own internet they limit themselves to.
really, hindrance of freedom of speech and the press anywhere is wrong, i think. maybe if citizens were allowed to speak their mind and government listened, we might improve.

Meh. Chinese techies are idiots. I've heard of plenty of ways to breach the thing (for example the CIA provides a website for the Chinese).
[random rand]
Btw for schools. You know that little piece of paper you have to sign to use the computers? For me, and my school, and my previous school (which wasn't private) they all had this slip of paper you had to sign that signed away your rights for searching the web freely. They can do whatever they want, or rather whatever your mothers want because it is mostly their opinion that influences what is politically correct or not (like any gives a damn). It amazes me how we can criticize other nations of their censorship when in this country if you say something not politically correct (like saying that a "special" person is retarded [which they are whether you like it or not]) you teacher will correct you and say, "That's not a nice way of putting it."
You know what they call all this? Liberalism. Kind of ironic since being literally liberal means that you will try new things. People are conservative in my opinion when they do stuff like the above mentioned. Yet they call themselves liberal.

agreed. i usually just take the paper they give me and leave it somewhere in my house. they give me logon credentials on the network anyways.
overall, the great chinese firewall and censorship as a whole can be summed up with this:
