Beginner Sig help

The only time I've ever heard render was in 3ds Max. What exactly is it and when people make there sigs, they use a render or whatever. I also see teh cut it out. Do they take a picture off the internet or something and cut out a portion? Overall, I need a basic explanation of renders to clarify this stuff for me because I'm going to experiment today. Thanks for any help.

There are two definitions of renders. There are 3D renders, such as you see in the Render Gallery thread, on the Pictures board, and there are renders in graphical things, which is essentially a cutout picture used in a piece of work.
