The section of the trailer where they said Shepherd is dead..
I'm not really thinking that they just completely killed him off, due to the fact that they themselves have stated that you can import your previous character into the second game, and that choices you made in the first one really impact the direction of the second one.

They say killed in action.
Easily corruptable/twistable message considering the possibilities of the endings/events in Mass Effect 1. Heck, they could call him responsible for the death of the council and announce he's been killed for it...Yet he'd be still alive and trying to fix things while spectres try and hunt him secretly or some crap...
I dunno, he's just not dead. They wouldn't turn their backs on the much touted "keep your saves for the next one" feature as well as getting rid of everything done in the first. But they could pull a Metal Gear
I dunno. Just speculation.

I'm thinking he was kidnapped/abducted, and has been missing for so long that they announced him KIA...but he really isn't dead.
I don't know...I just really hoping he's not actually dead. I really loved the first one.
