"The wait is finally over! The first details of EA and BioWare's long-kept secret MMO project, Star Wars: The Old Republic were revealed moments ago at a press conference is still underway in San Francisco.
SWTOR is based on the Knights of the Old Republic universe from BioWare's Xbox and PC creations. The Old Republic is a "story-driven MMO," and Bioware jokes that The Old Republic is KOTOR 3,4,5 and beyond.
The Old Republic is BioWare's first take into the MMORPG world. BioWare said that each player in the upcoming MMO will have their own unique story, where again, consequences will be faced whether the player chooses to walk the path of light or delve into the dark side.
BioWare's Greg Zeschuk said during the press event that companion characters in The Old Republic would play a significant role. Much like the support characters in the past KOTOR titles, whether the players decides to become a Sith Lord or a Jedi Knight, companion characters will change according to the player's decisions.
Players can embark on their new Star Wars journey through the Sith Empire or the Galactic Republic, each supporting multiple sub-classes with unique storylines. Game art director Jeff Dobson said that his team focused on making each character in the game iconic to promote each class further to players. So, creating our very own Han Solo and Boba Fett could be very possible indeed.
According to Zeschuk, his team is currently "working hard" to bring us the title and for now, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be available for the PC.
So, it's been confirmed folks. BioWare's next Star Wars project is indeed a MMO title. Are you happy with the decision, or would you rather have seen a Knights of the Old Republic 3 RPG game? Let us know, but as for us, we're already contemplating on how our lives will revolve around this title when it launches.
The game's official website is now live."

I LOVED the ones on the Xbox... I must have literally played both of them 50 times... One of the few games I can play over and over. BioWare makes great games. I can't wait for this!

Unhappy. I would have liked a standalone Kotor3 on 360.

It has a singeplayer story built-in. The MMO part is for added enjoyment. There's still hope on a 360 release I think.. I hope.

It may have Single-Player, but this has just killed it for me.
By fact, we know that MMO's are hated by 60% of the Gaming Community(WoW, Guild Wars, Runescape), and the fact Bioware has done this *** me of.
I can also pretty much guarantee a Pretty Boring Plot, seeing as how Bioware's last game, Mass Effect, had nothing too inspirational.

I really enjoyed Mass Effects story. I'm guessing you didn't like it because as a trilogy game they purposely didn't address everything?

No, I just found the Plot really Dull, and it barely took any time to complete.

ya know, back when i played WoW i would have wet and crapped my pants at the same time to hear about this, but now that i quit WoW, and have declared never again to waste time with MMOs again, i kinda wish they had chosen "KOTOR 3 4 and 5 and beyond" instead of an MMO

I think you're over generalizing this game drastically. Keep in mind that it's a story-based MMO; meaning the Massive Multiplayer part is almost more so a perk. Also keep in mind that since it's a server based deal, frequent updates will likely occur to keep content fresh and the worlds expanding. Thus making it possible to essentially make this game a never ending sequel that builds upon itself.

God damn it every time I see a star wars game i keep thinking they all have this same name. I thought the first was, second, all the other starwars games were The Old Republic. ;x
I hate MMO's. And I know for fact I will hate this.

1. the fact remains that this is still an MMO and that WoW officially ruined MMOs for me.
2. That is one of the things that made WoW bad, you can't beat it. there's nothing to aim for, you just play, and play, and play

1: Yes, because WoW is the only style of MMO in existence. Do you know what MMO stands for? It's a Massive Multiplayer Online game. You're attaching unnecessary and unfair baggage to a game that has a totally different foundation. WoW is an MMORPG that is built of generic MMORPG leveling traits compiled with quests and gimmicks. This KOTOR will be an MMO, and an RPG, but not held by the same standards or requirements. It'll essentially be the same KOTOR you know and love, but server based and filled with real people rather than NPCs. Real people that can also be ignored as you follow through the single player campaign. Which addresses your second point as well. Being narrow minded won't get you anywhere. It's not fair to judge this game over a game like WoW; which is a generally different game. The game has aim, and final objectives; just more than 1. Thus adding replay value. Though, I assume you're one of those people who likes to play a game one time, beat it, and never play it again. If so, just ignore me.

It wasn't the MMO
RPG1. part of WoW that ruined MMOs for me, it was the
MMO part. Yes i know what those both stand for, despite first impressions i am not retarded.
a bunch of new MMOs do that, take the MMORPG genre, remove the RPG and replace it with something else, like shooter (Tabula Rasa) in this case, they just added a space between MMO and RPG so that they can keep normal RPG elements that they found in their original games instead of needing to change it drastically to fit the MMORPG genre
2. two answers:
a) if you mean there are absolutely no NPCs and the players give you missions, then that is even worse!
b) if you mean there are no more random Jawas and stuff around and instead there are players, that still doesn't seem too much different from WoW
followup to a&b). Either way, it says there will be 2 factions right? sith(dark side) and republic(light side)? in which case the light/dark choice system from the originals is gone if you just choose at the beginning. that also means that you can't ignore EVERYONE, you see a fellow republic member, sure you can ignore them. but if you see a sith, chances are they will attack you, believe me, i know how MMOs work, this stuff happens.
server based gameplay is another thing that kept me playing WoW forever. i would be playing on one server, minding my own business, getting really high level, then all of the sudden i learn a bunch of my friends are playing on other servers, so i switch to one of those servers and start all over again, adding, on top of the fact that the game has no end, to how long it will take me to max out my level.
3. Don't call me narrow minded if don't like MMOs, i know for a fact i wont like this.
4. so does WoW, but they keep releasing updates and expansions that made the goal higher and higher so that you can never reach iit without having no life.
5. ....no....
edit: short and simple answer: if WoW wasn't MMO and the only multiplayer was PVP battlegrounds and they didn't have constant updates releasing new content to make the game impossible to beat, then it might actually be a decent game in my opinion, but it isn't, and unfortunately neither will this
6. If you'd like to, now i'd rather we stop arguing and leave it at the fact that i don't like MMOs and won't be getting this game, but you do, and will be getting it. savvy?

I could literally just respond with my post prior to this, but yes, I'll stop. Also, normally I don't like MMOs either. I dig their concept, but I feel alienated in the many I've tried. I have new reasons to have faith in this MMO.

i don't see why MMo's are most looked down in the games community if you have to pay(yeah its hard if you gotta pay for something you just brought)
