Unless the game is open source it's illegal.

how do i know if its open source? what if the models are custom made by other people, and then were meant to be put in vice city to replace other models.....those models wouldnt be made by the actual game, so it would be legal right?

say you download an "Fan Made" AKS-74u for GTA Vice City, and you got permission from the Creator to use his models and textures, you should be allowed to put it into halo 2... but origional game content is illiegal... unless you get the game creators permission.

I still don't fully get why people try to protect mods and have to ask permission. I mean, aren't they already pretty much just modifying copyrighted work?

Well would you want someone to steal something you made?

that really does depend, take GTA:VC for instance, if someone took the time to completely model, texture and animate a AE-86 Toyota Corolla Sprinter Trueno, from scratch, for that game, they probably wouldn't be happy about someone stealing their model that they spent a lot of time and effort to create.

if all the models and textures and anim's are completely fan made, then they are not just "modifying copyrighted work" because they have completely created it from the ground up.

if i spent days creating something, i would be pissed if someone else just decided to take that creation and take all the credit for it,

if i created something like that, i would let other people use it if they asked permission and gave credit to me for creating such object.

yes but you really aren't taking the models out of the game and putting it some where else like another game. and halo is a game that actrually suports moding.

It is now, but the core game is still Halo no matter what you do to it, but hey, I'm all for modding or I wouldn't be here ;)
