Help with mapping!

Post by boymonkey1300 »

I've been trying to learn how to make CE maps lately, that's why i haven't been posting anything, really, but I don't have paintshop, and I don't have 3DS, so the tuts that I downloaded can't help me that much. I need someone that knows how to map using: The GIMP, GMAX, and HEK. because that's all I have right now. and the tuts are hard to follow when you don't have the same tools.:?
PLEASE pm me if you have those tools, or wanna help. I haev good ideas, I jsut can't find how to do anything.

its impossible witht the resources you have now. words of advise: get photoshop or paintshoppro. dl the new 3ds max (8) or (7) depending on if you have already. watch the tutorials CAREFULLY. and seek guidence from some via AIM or msn where they can talk to you directly. Making a map doesnt happen in one afternoon, unless you know what your doing. departing words: you dont have the propper tools, you dont have a ce map ;) hope this was informative

It is impossible. Just because your paint program isn't sufficient. You need paintshop pro or photoshop. Keep gMAX if you don't have money to pay for it
I made 2 maps with Gmax so it's deffinatly possible. You just need paintshop/photoshop.<they are not that expensive(i think)

I looksed at a few paintshops, and the only ones I could find were packs with useless things, and the packs were about 300 dollars. Anyone know how to get JUST paintshop? I don't want the other crap they make you buy with it.

Just wondering, why do you say it is impossible?

I personaly havn't tried this out but it has been featured on "Attack of the Show" on G4TechTV. It is supposed to be a hack that is close to exactly like Photoshop except run on GIMP.

Actually, the GIMP will work just fine. When I was following the HEK video tutorial, I did just fine using GIMP instead of photoshop. It's just a little different in the process of creating the mask and applying it to the alpha chanel. What you basically do is create a mask and edit the mask to where you want the grass to show up. Then all you need to do is apply the mask and save it as .tiff. MAKE SURE YOU SAVE THE COLORS OF TRANSPARENT PIXELS WHILE IN THE SAVE PROMPT. It worked like a charm for me.

You can use GIMP for your textures, it's a great (not to mention free) alternative for Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop. You can also use Gmax to model and just use JamesD's Exporter script to export your models to .JMS. Ofcourse it will be a bit difficult to follow the tutorials without the same tools, but it's not impossible. Good luck though.

Gimp works fine. I've made a few random test maps with textures from the GIMP, looks exactly the same.

Nothing is impossible.
