I'm totally new to modeling, mapping, modding, etc... I was wondering how you can convert a halo map (.map) into a 3d model (.3ds)?

I don't think you can. I might be mistaken, though.

Is there a way to convert a .map into something that can be converted into a .3ds?

Is there a way to get a halo map as a .3ds?

This converts it into a .obj, you'll need a .scenario_structure_bsp http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=2029

Extract the .scenario_structure_bsp with this. http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?pg=3&fid=1542

Use this to convert it to a 3ds from .obj http://www.anim8or.com/main/index.html

Sorry for the double post but how can you get the textures in the .3ds? The model is only raw, no textures, colors, nothing. How do you include them?

Do you know how to add them into the .3ds after the conversion?

Extract them using HMT and convert it from a DDS to a .tif. Then just add it into the material editor in 3ds max. In the HEK tutorial it shows you how to texture your map. The tutorial should be in your Halo Custom Edition folder.

Where exactly are the textures located in the resource browser (HMT)?

In the "[Bitm] Bitmap."

All the ones for the maps can go from "levels\a10\....." to "levels\test\......."
