knowledge of modding, don't hold it back

Post by Zilazapper2 »

People have been making breakthroughs in modding lately, like sp to mp conversions, new utilities, perfect models, etc. But, none are usually ever released, they are kept so secret that if someone posts one they get tagged and sometimes even banned for leaking it. Especially when things like videos and pics are posted and people practically have to get down and beg for a mod to only receive "it's not done yet","it is still in testing", or just the fact that it won't be released because it is "secret". Things like that are holding the modding community back, people are starting to sound like bungie, microsoft, and gearbox, they are even getting mad about the HEK not being out and don't realize that they are creating the same effect. I don't understand why they don't just release it, they'll still be rewarded, be labled a breakthrough modder, and at the same time help the modding community. If things weren't kept so secret and hidden from others, we would probably be alot further in modding, if things like that are released we might even gain enough knowledge from it to develope somthing close to the HEK before it even arrives if ever. My point is, don't be greedy, share your findings and work, be a team, help create a better modding foundation, and don't hog the knowledge. This is my opinion and may not be the same as yours, so vote in the poll and post your feelings about this subject, don't let the modding community destroy itself,

-Zilazapper- :?
EDIT: I have to agree with many of you, modding info and hints should not be held back, but full mods don't exactly need to be released, my point in the above post is that info should atleast be released and if someone wants to release a mod they should not be kept from doing it, for example the reason that made me right this post was that a friend of mine did a conversion, posted a vid, and people got mad and said not to release it, they accused him of getting a leaked tutorial and said that he used that when he did not, then people said he could get banned for releasing the mod, that is so stupid, people holding others back like that,

-Zilazapper-

EDIT#2: New and improved point: Don't tell us about your new mod way before it is finished and get our hopes up, please just tell us about it when you have an exact release date "it puts less stress on the community" as stated in an above post, also if your gonna tell us early atleast keep us updated, and last of all, I don't know how I can get it across but, Don't Tell The Community About A Mod If Your Going To Never Release It Or Keep It For Yourself, Period. Thankyou,
-Zilazapper

well i agree and disagree
if a single person makes sumthing they dont have to release it but they shouldnt rub it in our faces and give to a select few
but things shouldnt be rushed i would rather it take longer and have no bugs at all then come out and be crappy

i agree, to me it seems as if there are a select few that do all the stuff and they wont post tutorials or anything on how to do something similar

there would be no point in posting a tut if the tools arent released
and i dont really care if they are released or not because my fucking computer decided to stop letting me run halo and now i hate it forever

in reply to hoborockassasin, If they release it early it will not only make people happy but people can help solve bugs, I would love to beta HMT3.5 and help fix bugs but it isn't that way :? , get what I am saying?

If modders just released mods, no one would do any modding and wouldn't learn the advacned stuff, but by not releaseing the stuff, they force us to think of how it can be done allows us to become smarter so that we can do it for ourselves

most new modders don't even know how to do simple things if hmt or spark edit can't do it, and i think that is sad

one thing that helps, is people like Grenadiac who explain how it all works, but allows the user to make there own mods and not depend on him or others

yes! your right, people like gren, I also meant tutorials and knowledge, if I could convert a map on my own using a tut or some info to get close to doing so I would, but people hold that back too, someone got banned for posting a sp>mp conversion tut, DS I believe, thankyou for atleast telling me how you feel, your feedback is appreciated

i think that some information should be released. Flat out telling some one to do it would defeat a lot of fun ( the fun that you get after figuring it out ), but if they gave you a hint or somthing it would be nice. There arnt that many things that i want to know how to do that im not willing to work at, so yes and no to your post.

I would have to say I agree with you guys saying yes and no now, believe me though lol, I am not saying just hand it over, I have tryed on and on to fix elite models when I extract them into BG, I have even looked into other mods with perfect models to try to find hints and clues, but so far nothing that actually worked... :?

I will have to agree, somewhat. all of a sudden this community feels like bush's presedency... all secrecy and lies... why does it have to be like this?

I don't believe any of the advanced modders are "holding back", at least none of the ones I associate with...They are simply working on their mods, and waiting until they're complete before releasing them...It would be silly to release a mod on a daily basis to let everyone see how it's going...

As for advanced modders writing tutorials to tell you how things are done, many of them are working on it this time around...This goes back to the dmauro days...Some people are only interested in modding...And while "figuring things out" they have other things on their mind than "I better write this down for my tutorial later"...And by the time they're complete with their mod, they don't even recall half the things they have done...

To be arrogant about "I'm better than you, this is what I can do, and you can't" is just stupid, however, with the "advanced modders" that I see on a semi-daily basis, this is not the case...

If you want to mod, and be left alone, is that too much to ask?..Who are any of us to say "well, you chose to be a modder, so now you have to help the rest of us, cause thats your job"...Let the modders be modders, the programmers be programmers, and everyone else be who they wish to be in peace...

i dont think they should hold information back
if they give out info people will try it and either fail or succeed it cant do any harm
but as for programs they dont necesarily have to release it with they dont want to since its their creation it just would be easier for everyone else and the community would get farther with wit but like i sed its their choice

I heard from ZexGX that bobindashadows is makin a model plugin for HMT3.5 to inject RAW models. THATS RIGHT, A MODEL OF YOUR CHOISE! Duplicate a vehile, give it it's own name and model, and WHAMO!

perhaps they're not "holding back", however, most of them haven't said a word in a month. wtf? cant they just say something on their progress, even just weekly?

and as for "modding in peace", if they're working on something groundbreaking for the entire community, are they still entitled the right to complete secrecy? personally I think they're just hurting the community at this point. they can't even be trusted with our hope. so lets all forget who mono and group are, and move on.

yes, thats right, mono hasn't posted in almost 3 weeks, which was to flame me. Mono, if you're out there, Im really getting sick of this.

Thats probably why HEK has yet to be released.

Added: Someone posted that already, but you get the point...
