Ads in MP levels?

Post by DECOY »

Ok.....

An acquaintance of mine in the ad industry has mentioned that theres talk around his odffice of whether its possible to put sponsored company logos or ads (digital billboards?) into online video games, and in particular custom MP levels.

Appparently theres higher Kudos with some brands in being assocaited with perceived "underground" stuff. (Er, yes they mean you!)

I dont know exactly what he means or how far it would go, personally I think its the stupidest idea I've heard for about a week. I mean, flags in a CTF game being Nike or Reebok logos, or maybe reskinning the warthogs as pizza delivery!!! Hah! Seriously though, he seemed to think that a company wanting to target the demographic covered by online gaming, would be very interested in this.

I have no idea what a digital billboard is. But if they approached you when you were putting your latest MP level together and offered "sponsorship" what would you do?

Has anyone else heard of, or possibly even been approached on something like this?

Absolutley not. Advertisers have already infected enough of the media I dont need them infecting my videogames as well. Besides when people are playing games, they are paying attention to the game and will probably not even notice advertisements on objects inside the game.

If there were ads in video games, I would stop playing games all together. If I so much as saw a hint of an ad in ANY video game this is what I'd think:

1. hmm... a burger king ad...
2. someone has to die.
3. someones GOING to die.
4. begin game destruction phase 1:
___1. grab game disc
___2. place in microwave
___3. turn to high, leave on for 50(+) minutes.
5. go to black market, list of ingredients:
___1. one standard us military rocket launcher
___2. 4 Ak- 47s and 6000 rounds of ammo
___3. 60 box's of rocket launcher ammo
___4. 100 rounds of C4
___5. map to game makers headquarters (aka, the 'bunker')
___6. one standard US main battle tank
___7. 150 armor piercing tank rounds
6. search out and destroy.
Good bye. So long. I hope we never meet again. F u halomods.com

O..KAY..... LMAO!
I dont know how the strings that are supposed to hold your sleeves behind your back came loose, but if you don't calm down I WILL CALL THE NURSE!

I dont think Ads actually inside games is a problem for the immediate future. I think the problem will be that these ad companies are sneaky b*****ds. If cool hogs skins designed like major brands suddenly become available for free download. Someone, somewhere will have them running around in their games. I dont think ad companies are gonna pay to have a vitual billboard modelled onto the cliff in Bloodgulch just yet! However, if they set up a contract with someone like Gamespy or XBOX, you could find yourself clicking through yet more sponsors ad to get out of the game lobby and into the game.

Right cos' no one made any money when Halo 2 sold 125 million copies worldwide. No business going on there. Nope.

Hahahaha! Really ad-like.

I think that if there were ads in games, they sould be limited and realistic.
I mean that I wouldn't mind if they put up a McDonalds ad in the POA's cafeteria.

But I wouldn't put things where they don't belong or where it's annoying, like bloodgulch having a large ad on the cliff or an ad put up somewhere in a forerunner structure.
And it would be even worse if there was a tv-commercial everytime you finish a level.

Ads are ok by me, as long as they are realistic and don't ruin the game.

Halo sold 3 million copies worldwide.....and advertising has been in games for the past 10 years. How do you think games are funded nowadays? Advertising. Take nfsu2. The entire city is made up of REAL shops and product placement. Do you think they didn't accept gratuities from those real shops and car brands while making the game? You people are fools.

We're talking about games in general. We know there are some games where advertising is in the background, but we're talking about other games, not racing games or sport games. Obviously there are ads in those.

product placement is in EVERY game. You just have to look carefully. Thats how games are funded. People usually don't have $50 million lying around. Microsoft isn't even willing to spend so much on a game.

I DONT CARE IF THAT GAME WAS ADVERTISED

I don't want ads in the game!!!!!! IT WOULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT!!!!

Think about it! Theres an ad playing. Heres what goes through the persons mind:

I'm never going to McDonalds now, they are making me wait to play my game!

Now my games gonna lag, becasue all these ads suck.

Think about things before you say them :)

With advertising, stick to places where people will LISTEN to the ad, not get mad at the advertiser!!! THAT IS NOT THE POINT OF AN AD!!!!

compleetly retarted, because all video games are, are interactive storys. would you like to be sitting and reading a book, it stops mid sentence with a message from pepsi that takes up 3 pages.
now i admit, it has already been done. in games say like grand theft auto, the sims, and a few other's. but these are only images of the product. like he goes and grabs a can as part of the story, but it is a pepsi can. you don't seem to notice it, but it's there.
But in halo, NOOOO, it takes away from the atmosphere the game creates.
