Halo Handheld? Its Possible....
Halo Handheld? Its Possible....
Okay first this is more of an obeservation on marketing and technology (freatureing the xbob) then actually about halo...but, i noticed with the current nintendo ds and sony psp coming out...soon (or now for the ds) i wondered how powerful they are...they are about as powerful as the N64 and playstation right? I also noticed that they came always at the end of the year (when the next systems were announced with power and graphical specs). I follow technology pretty well (mostly audio/video copmuter type things), and know (as well as most of you), that technology is always updating, so i figured we should've had a handheld gaming system that is as powerful (if not close to) the xbox. The playstation 2 is even smaller now (wish the xbox would do the same so i can put it in my car), so i know its possible, im just wondering is it all a big marketing plan, they have the technology they just don't want to build it because it would discourage buying of there stay-at-home systems like the xbox and playstation 2. But i figured if you put them in a different format and make them non-backwards compatible then it should be ok yes? plus there probably is no way (other then flash memory) that the xbox portable can have a harddrive so the stay-at-home system would have THAT advantage...I was just thinking how cool it would be to play halo via wireless multiplayer with a portable xbob.

i think the psp runs at around 333mhz, maybe.... and i would guess that would be the more powerful of the 2 systems (ds v psp). if your idea was to port halo to the psp/ds then i dont think that would be an easy thing to do. the halo pc says it needs at least 733 mhz, 1.2 gb of hd space, 128mb ram, and a 32 mb vid card. and the psp is not even close to that. BUT i think it could be ported if you try really, and i stress REALY hard. i think the psp could posibly handle halo at 333mhz because, unlike windows/mac, almost all of that power will go to the game and not to other programs in the background. also on top of all that the res would be really low which would also increase preformance. 1.2gb of hd space is not a problem cause the sony mini-dvd things can hold 1.8gb, and then you have memory cards. the places that become problems are the ram and vid memory. what would have to be done is decrease ALL the polygons in most if not all of the objects in the game and turning down stuff like particles, detials, and all that other stuff. this would also mean alot of code-redoing cause psp is not windows or xbox. i still think that w/ a ton of work it could be done and it would be cool for 16 people to play each other wirelessly. it would be awsome, but VERY HARD TO DO.
no i think your missing my point, not port it, im saying that the portable systems out now are watered down then what they REALLY could be, im saying that the systems should already be at playstation 2 and xbox status as a portable, they just don't because it would reduce sells of the stay-at-home consoles...i mean thing about all the laptops (which i build) and the portable media players or palm pilots they have similar things to it. And your reading off the halo pc box? no im judging by halo 1 on xbox standards, (which is smoother to me), they have palm piolets and laptops (small ones) that can run at such speeds, so it shouldn't be a problem making it sure the cost might be high (around $400 to $600 at start) but i think the price would go down over time...just wondering why they havn't yet...and why i have to wait until 2007 to get halo on a portable...

ok i see what your saying now, ... and you could be right when it comes to them being watered down, and i think in part that is because of battery life and battery size. systems that could run halo could be handheld but i would think if you didn't have a HUGE battery then the think would die in not time. also, in order for a system to run halo, it could be small, but i dont think if could be as small as the psp/ds and companies probably think people wouldn't go for something inbetween a small laptop and a handheld. if it wont fit in your hand then its not portable.

ima thinking if they made a sorta "watered-down" version of halo, like a halo handheld version, like you were saying, it would be a toned-down graphics, smaller file size game.
They can do it.
like i mean, SUPER compress the gaming files and REALLY pixelize the game Graphics ( this would make the file size smaller also, but if you played it on a 2.5 inch screen it wouldnt make much of a difference in looks...) if you did that, it would be able to be played on a handheld system and also look decent, too.
They can do it.

yeah if you make the pixels look like lara croft 1 or EVEN doom 1, but keep the halo physics (is that possible?), i think it would be awsome...but yeah your right about the battery didn't really think of that people complain about the gameboy sp battery life already, (basic cell phone battery lol), so a system like that would require a plug all the time..eh nice try tho thanks for the help guysAbbabibble wrote:ima thinking if they made a sorta "watered-down" version of halo, like a halo handheld version, like you were saying, it would be a toned-down graphics, smaller file size game.

i agree about the $ and the poor graphics BUT can you beat the multiplayer?? look at the DS and PSP, if these are the bases of what is to come then i expect all the next gen handhelds to have wi-fi. this would make it posible for local and online multiplayer. all you would need is 2+ handhelds in the same area and you can have a mini halo lan party. that would rock... but i dont think halo on a 2.5" screen would look that bad. if the screen has the same # of pixels per inch as my laptop (15.4" 1920x1600 res) then it would still look damn good! i dont think any company would actually make this though due to the gaming industry being a corporate battle where everyone is against everyone else, if it does get ported it would be some small team of people that hacked the halo source code and then did a port. if its good, they will be praised...

NO. A gamebox and or a PSP, even an Ngage (I hate PSP AND NGAGE!! THEY COPIED NINTENDO!!! THEY SUCK!!!) would not be able to play halo even with watered down graphics. I have every version of the game boy out yet (Well, gameboy color and basic GBA...) and the 3d games on the GBA were lame... like, my freinds played it and like the level he played was like a tunnel, but it was a box. Just a box. Tjhe skins had detail but the whoole fricking level was flat!

Re: Halo Handheld? Its Possible....
Well, its an idea. But my guess would probably be a new version altogether like u said. And making a handheld wireless? That's a really good idea, to. But is it worth it? Saving and gaining money is an MS priority. If they dont think that this will make them rich like Windows 95 did, then I doubt it will ever happen. That would be hilarious tho, XBL Portable. Great Idea firetoy, but just like the PSP, it came out after it's big brother. If i remember correctly, the PS2 came out before xbox. Nintendo has always been making handhelds. Microsoft just joined the gaming industry. It seems a handheld like the PSP comes out after it's big brother has been out for a while. Microsoft has been working on the Xbox since 2000, and they are still making motherboard revisions. I don't think they're going to worry about a handheld for a while yet.

I DO think they could, but it wouldn't have as good grafics, like the metriod prime:hunters on the nintendo ds. It would be VERY cool to have, but it wouldnt have as good grafics, and they might have to take some of the features out. nonetheless, it would be VERY cool to have halo handheld. especially if htey added co-op or wireless multiplayer.
