How do I get a reference picture in the left view for gmax? I did it once off of FleetAdmiralBacon's AK-47 tutorial, but I can't find the tut now.

Thanks,
The Doc

I made no such tutorial. You're thinking of someone else.

i haven't used gmax, but this would be how for 3ds max:

1) open up the creation tab and select plane, then go to the left viewport.
2) make a standard reference plane as you would any other time.
3) place it as you would place a reference plane
4) add the reference picture to it using the material editor (M)

don't make a plane... do this:

select your viewport

click views

viewport background

click files

navigate to the appropriate image and select it

click match bitmap

click ok

now you have a clear view of what it is you're modeling.
