Sometimes it's better to leave with dignity than crawl along in desperation. The site would be better shut down than having tons of problems resulting from a hasty switch. A home server is just not practical in this situation.

I haven't had time to read all ten pages but I do have a suggestion. I know that donations have been talked about a little bit but there is a good way of doing it. There is this thing you can get called chipin. You set how much you need per a period of time and then people can use paypal to donate and then it will show up how much is left needed for that month or w/e. I donated to a site or two that way. Good service should mean good people helping it. Nothing is free free.

Link to chipin:

I have a suggestion. We should all donate if we can and put in here that we donated and how much. That way we can have a general idea of how its going. That chipin thing would be great. Then we could see the progress of the fund raising. Also we need the donate thing on the forums because I didn't even realize that this wasn't the entire site. I thought it was just a forums.

I donated 10 bucks just now. Let's do this thing.

OK. Adsence is a good programme for web developers but there are other advertising programmes such as:

http://www.oxado.com/ - meant to be very good.
yahoo has an advertising thing I'm sure.

This would save the hassle of moving servers.

I don't think we need multiple ad companies plastering the site with ad's. That chip in site looks very interactive and a great way to donate. If it goes up a little I will feel inclined to donate too. Just my idea.

This may sound odd, but I have not been following this thread since the beginning, so here it is. Can we set up multiple web servers for each section? that way we can spread the bandwidth over multiple hosts and not have to worry about one server becoming overloaded with people trying to connect. Maybe it is just me but I think that might work if it came to that.

Bandwidth is not a problem. We do not need to distribute it.

Pretty sure HM already has a CafePress store. I think GIR did the logos for it, he got a book for free as a result.

The descriptions say that income goes toward an H2V Server.

Does Grenadiac pay for that too?

Because, if not, it's not really contributing to keeping the site alive.

He pays for a server right now. The ads aren't covering it. Did you read the first post?

xptoast, you missed the point of his post.

The merchandise says the profits go towards a H2V server. Such a server would likely not be paid for by Grenadiac.

He is asking if that money goes to Gren or not, because it is not clear.

Well...

Cluster computing anyone?

What if you make it a requirement for membership that people give unused processing and computing power to the server to reduce costs?... Or would it present too many security loopholes/conversion nightmares?

The latter. The benefits of doing something as that would be far outweighed by the costs and impracticality.

I always liked the concept of cluster computing. I am going to make one of my own some time, but for my own use.

But uh, you have heard of those websites that you can sign up to support with your processing power haven't you? There is one for some science, and one for medical etc. But, looking over the posts in more detail, I see that the it is paying for bandwidth that is the problem. And sadly, cluster processing will do nothing for that. Darn.

What about making an Apache server on a personally posessed computer and getting verizon's FIOS?

Actually, I believe bandwidth wasn't our problem, but paying for processor or cpu speed... something like that.
