Replace the Xbox 360 HDD

Post by HaLo2FrEeEk »

I want to do it. I want to buy a 160 GB 2.5" SATA Harddrive (or bigger) and replace my existing 20GB drive. I've seen tutorials online for doing it, but I've never tried it and I don't want to spend the money on a drive without knowing that it'll work.

I know how to take apart the Xbox 360 HDD, I've plugged the 20GB drive into my PC already. I've used XPlorer 360 to make a backup image of the drive. Now, please be gently because I can see a few holes in this plan, but it seems that it might be as simple as formatting the new drive, and replacing the backup image to the new drive using XPlorer 360. That, or I could use Norton Ghost to make a ghost image of the 20GB HDD and flash that image to the new drive (which, I know, would have to be formatted as FATX.)

Please help me in this, is it this simple? Would I be able to simply swap out the drives and get more storage space, or is there more to it? I've heard that sometimes no matter what size drive you install (as long as it's larger than 20GB,) it will be read as 20GB because of a value at a certain offset, or something. Is there a way to get around that? I want to install a 160GB or 320GB drive and have all that storage space (excluding, of course, the space needed for the updates, backwards compatibility, and formatting.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe you can only go up to 120gb. But I am outdated (and I'm sure that article is by now also)

April 22 2007, I'm sure it's outdated. I can't believe the console has been out for so long and no one's figured out a way to put a bigger HDD on it. There HAS to be a way.

Xbox 360's retail kernal won't recognize anything over 120GB.

Damn. Well I could still buy a 120 GB laptop HDD and use that, right? It'd be cheaper than buying a retail 120GB, they're like, $160.

I'm pretty sure it has to be a Western Digital BEVS series 120GB Laptop drive. That's what I read, I just thought you could do more than 160. It seems rediculous that the Xbox would limit that, what it MS wants to release a bigger HDD?

They publish a kernel update.

I remember looking into this in the past and it sounded like a huge pain in the ass. It required you have a device ID or something from a legit 360 drive first, which sorta defeats the whole purpose. Idk, I could be misremembering or out of date, but it sounded annoying at best.

It doesn't seem like it'd be TOO hard, I just replaced the harddrive in my original xbxo in a little less than an hour without knowing anything about how to do it starting out. OF course the hardware is different but it's the same general concept.

No, I don't mean annoying in a technical sense, I mean (based on what I read in the past) it is almost totally impractical because you would need specific data extracted from a retail 360 HDD in order for it to work, thus practically making it useless. If you look into it and I am wrong though, please let me know!

I'm not 100% sure, so I could be totally wrong, but from what it sounds like you can just ghost the old harddrive to he new one. The new one has to be a specific manfuacturer, brand, and model to work though, so it is a bit annoying. It's useful though, if you can get it to work, because a 120Gig HDD of the right type is WAAAAY cheaper to buy than a new retail Xbox 360 HDD.

ive done this and twice (screwed up the first time) when you transfer the data make sure that you do it one folder at a time instead of just restoring the backupoh and btw if you do this and your new drive is WD1200BEVS-22RST0 please send me the undo.bin

It won't be for quite a while that I do this. I don't havea job right now so keeping food on the table and bills payed is more of a priority than upgrading my harddrive.
