Go to your display settings in the Xbox dashboard. Change the Widescreen option to Standard TV. This will trick the game into thinking you're playing on a regular TV.

Split screen orientation explained.
Xbox.com wrote:How to change the split screen mode when playing Halo 2

In split screen mode, you can switch the game screen between vertical (left/right) and horizontal (top/down) by switching the video settings in the Xbox Dashboard from Wide Screen to Normal.

To switch between Wide Screen and Normal modes:

1. Remove the game disc from the disc tray.
2. Restart the Xbox with no disc in the disc tray and wait for the Xbox Dashboard to load.
3. From the main menu of the Xbox Dashboard, select Settings, and then press the A button.
4. In the Settings menu, select Video, and then press the A button.
5. Choose one of the following video modes:
* In the Video Setting menu, choose Normal to set the Halo 2 split screen mode to horizontal.

-OR-
* In the Video Setting menu, choose Wide Screen to set the Halo 2 split screen mode to vertical.
6. Press A to complete the selection.
7. Press B to return to the Xbox Dashboard.

Now what about doing it while keeping your widescreen. Is there not something that can be changed in the default.xbe file to do the same thing. With all the things you can modifiy in Halo 2, looks like changing the split screen mode would be easy. Then again I'm no coder.

If anyone knows how to, please share...

I'd imagine that's VERY difficult to do. The idea of it being vertical is to give you a better gaming experience, do you realise how thin the two screens would be on widescreen? Learn to live with it, it is actually better.

Yeah try explaning that to your buddies that come over and play. There like how do you fix that and I have to explain it to them, they hate it. Imagine getting use to the setup one way, then have to go home and learn your other way all over again. I'm sure you could just get use to like anything else, but that's like saying leave invert out for a game and just get use to the regular controls. Why all the hassel, when all Bungie had to do was enable a option for it. I'm surprised the Yelo trainer can't do it or someone else hasn't found a way other than changing your video preferences in the MS dahboard that affects the whole system.

It's not comparable to having inverted controls, because that is player preference. Having the screen divided vertically makes sense, on a wider screen... that's not opinion, it's logic.

If you horizontally split a widescreen TV into split screen, you have yourself there a Chinese TV.
And we don't take kindly to any PAL standard. ;)

I get crap about my TV all the time... "Your pixels are too stretched dude!" and then they make me change the format on it back to like 4:3 or something. CINEMATIC FTW! (62" Widescreen FTW too...)

Anything over 32" and you're compensating for something. Also, plasma ftl.
