A ppf is a patch.
It is applied to a map file in order to cause that map to have mods.
People make ppfs to allow other people to patch thier maps, and play each others mods.
Another similar file is a .Serenity, it works the same way.
These are made because posting a full .map file is illegal, however, patches are not.

Basicly it is an information file. For halo, you apply the ppf to its cooresponding map. When you apply the ppf to a map, the ppf tells the map what is in it, and the maps changes to match the ppf. So, if you have a zanzibar ppf to make you run fast and a zanzibar map, and you apply the patch to the map, the map will let you run fast.
