How to use the search function correctly!

Post by JK-47 »

Alright, since ive noticed hardly any new people know how to use the search function correctly, I decided to get off my lazy arse and make a tutorial :P.

I'ts really easy to follow, you just need to know how to read and look at pictures.

Step 1

While you are on the Halomods Forum Index or viewing a post, look up at the top, and close to the right hand corner will be a bunch of options, there is FAQ, Search, Memberlist, Usergroups, Profile, Private Messages, and the Log Out function.
What we want is the Search function, its right next to FAQ. Click it.

Image

Step 2

Good job, you have sucessfully clicked on the search button. But that's not all we have to do!
Ok, you should see a menu with the following functions:

Search for Keywords

What is search for keywords mr.genre? Well, what the Search for Keywords function is, say you are looking for a tutorial on how to Skin, well just click in there and type "Skinning Tutorials", and click search and, vualah, you have skinning tutorials. However, there will be SOME results that have nothing to do with skinning, just search through them, its really easy.

Image

Search for Author

What is the Search for Author function you ask? The Search for Author function allows you to search for posts or topics made by the author of your choice. For example, say you wanted to search for posts by Multi-Genre (zomg thats me :D!), just type the username in that trusty little box, then go to the bottom and press search, and badabam, you have posts by me!

Image

Forum

This function really comes in handy while searching, what this allows you to do is search for a post in a specific forum, which really narrows down the search.
Say for example you wanted to search for a tutorial, just type what you want in the Search for Keywords, then go down and go to the Forum function. Click on the little arrow shaped like this "V". Now there will be a dropped down box full of options, those options are different forums. Click on the tutorials one if you are searching for tutorials. And click search, and thar you go, you have specified search results for the tutorials forum :)

Image

Category

This function is really self explanitory. Say you want to search for something that involves Halo PC, just click on the arrow shaped like this "V" and it will drop down a list of options, click on the Halo PC option. Assuming you filled in the other fields, click search, and you will notice that you only got Halo PC search results.

Image

The following options are not needed to find accurate results, but they come in handy sometimes

Search Previous

What this feature does is you can narrow down how many results you get by how long ago they were posted. So say you only want topics from a week ago, just click on the "V" shaped button and it will drop down a list of the numbers of weeks you can choose to narrow it down by.

Image

Sort By

This function doesnt really do much for your search results, don't worry about it.

Image

Return First

What this does is narrows down the number of search results you want, pretty easy to use :)

Image

Putting your skills to the test

Ok, now that I have explained all this to you, lets do a test run of the search function :)

Ok, click on the search button at the top of your screen. Now, when the menu shows on your screen, look for the Search for Keywords function. Type in "Search Function" (with out the " ").
Now go down to the next option, called the Search for Author function, and type in "Multi-Genre" (once again, without the " ")
Now, go to the Forum function and click the arrow shaped like a V to drop down a list of forums, and select Tutorials.
In this example, the Category function really isnt necissary.
So you should have something like this:

Image

Now, go to the bottom and click the Search button. It will load and search for topics with your specifications, and will pop up a list of topics. Search for what topic you were looking for, and there you go! :)
As you see, it worked! :)

Image

Congratualtions, you now know how to use the search feature like a 1337 h4x0r champion!

Cool idea for a tutorial, but you missed some stuff that can really come in handy when searching.

You didn't include the "Display results as [Posts, Topics]" or the [Search for any terms or use query as entered, Search for all terms] buttons.

Oh yeah, I'll try to squeeze those in later :) I just thought they were way self explanitory.

Lol. I guess you made this in response to my post. And you use IE? IE sucks terribly. But hey now we have something to link to, so instead of just says search. You can say search.
My real name is a Mammoth, if someone who cares sees this, please change my name to a Mammoth

Please don't confuse me for a stupid little IE fanboy, I used mozilla for a year just to see what its like and I simply didn't like it, so I switched back.

Anways thanks for the good feedback, took me a while to make :x
