Misc: Converting .gmax files to OBJ/3DS

Post by Doctor »

This is an easy tutorial on how to get your .gmax to about anything you want!
And its all Free!

What you need

Gmax - The modeling program we will be using

3D Explorer - This is the Trial Version, I'm looking for full

MD3 Maxscript - H4x0rz 1337 plugins for gm4x

There are also .OBJ importers for gmax if you want them in the link above.

Converting the files

Create your model in gmax, then eport it as a .MD3 file (there is a tutorial for installing the maxscript with the download).
In 3D Explorer, goto file>open. Under the list types select .MD3, then browse to your folder. Open your model, and there will be a picture of it. Goto file>save and browse in the save as types for .[OBJ]. Click save, and you know have your model saved as whatever you want!

TBH, the only export function you'll ever need is .3ds.

Then Reaper, this tutorial is not for you, it is for all the modelers that are starting to model who cannot get there models out of gmax. A time ago when I started modeling I was getting so mad because I couldn't get my model out, now I have a found a way so I wanted to tell all the other noobs about it so they don't get frusterated.

using this to convert a gmax model file into a .obj is useless. all you need to do is on gmax/3dsmax export the file as p3d(the file the it will be converted to).where ever you exported it to, just change the .P3D to.obj and its an object file.trust me this works easilty .this will also work for changing files into many other types.

You can also use the MD5 Exporter/Importer.

A thread I posted elsewhere.

In relation to getting models out of gmax and into 3dsmax for use in Halo, the problem here isn't with 3DS Max but with GMax. Gmax was developed with the intention of having limited import and export capabilities this, in general, is provided by the additional installation of 'gamepacks' available for various games like 'Quake 3', 'Black & White' and MS 'Flight Simulator'. As there isn't an 'official' way to use gmax (or max) to create Halo content you have to work around the problem using what abilities Gmax does have, in this particular instance the MD5 exporter.
