Do you even play Halo 2 competitively? If this were true, people would have two teammates quit out at the start. Having half the players pretty much means you're screwed.

Actually, I can't even remember the number of games I've won when people left on my team. (probably because I haven't played in months...) It's both an advantage and disadvantage.
Advantage, because the other team has to look harder to find people to kill.
Disadvantage, because you can get overwhelmed if you run into a group of people.
If your on a team of smart people, it's still very possible to win if you're outnumbered. Even if you're by yourself, you can still win.
I remember a double team game where my friend had to leave, and he only had one kill. I ended up getting 29 kills and winning, not because I'm that good, but because I was using good strategies.
