Reading through the topic, I saw people wanting to get rid of the old files that are hosted here... I don't want to lose all that good stuff Halomods has made through the years... Just curious, how much space do the files take up?

Maybe someone generous and caring enough, would host the data on a good server, maybe they can take it off of SG's hands, which should in return take off all these annoying advertisements, or atleast most of them.

Once again, that is currently being worked on. So long as we don't lose the files here anytime soon, there shouldn't be too much worry if HM loses them in the future.

It's pretty cheap to just keep several gigs of data lying around on disk anyway.

What would be more important is how much bandwidth is being used hosting all those files.

But I don't think bandwidth is a terribly major issue, SG just wants to recoup his investment on the server hardware.

Hosting files on the servers has absolutely no impact on the ads at this point. Where the files are hosted makes no difference whatsoever. They can stay here, that is not why the ads exist.

But don't the files take up alot of space on the server, making it cost more?

How would that work? He has more files on his server... so somehow, although he already owns it, it costs him more if he puts more files on it? :S

I guess it's worth noting more clearly that SG owns the server the site is hosted on. He's not paying monthly for the server, so there's no way to downgrade the hosting and pay less, because he's already paying nothing. The ads are primarily to account for the cost of the server he bought, I presume, in addition to whatever his ISP may charge.

Not to be a loner on this.

but whats so bad about advertisements? thats like going to FOX and saying "i want you to remove your ads because it is ruining the veiwing experience" so what? so you see the same annoying mcdonalds commercial over and over again, big whoop, be glad that in halomods they DONT TALK TO YOU.

In fact, all they do is just sit there and be all animated, woop de doo. theyre not forcing you to click on them... why dont we all just start clicking ads if it gives halomods more money? i mean, you dont even need to look at the page let alone let it load...

just my opinion

As has been said countless times before, do NOT click ads unless you are genuinely interested in the advertised product. It's way too easy to get an adsense account suspended.

Anyway, has SG said anything about JacksonCougAr's original proposal here? I haven't seen it if he has.

Donating a reasonable amount per month to not see ads and to support the site seems like a good idea to me.

Where reasonable would be something like $1/month (and that's way more than what you'd get in ad revenue).

I think donations are the way forward. We should at least try for a month, see if it makes more than the ads.

Also, would anyone buy an email address, e.g. [email protected] or something like that.

Geo, I think that Email thing is a great idea, if a few people start buying them, why not slap it in the news or something?

i'd rather leave than pay monthly

i'm sure some members would love for me to leave :|

maybe if we did something like roosterteeth where if you were a subscriber than you got benefits like no ads or something actually worth a subscription

EDIT: email thing sounds like a good idea

I bought one of the sub-domains, so I'd consider a matching @halomods.com email address... what sorta pricing are you thinking though?

Or have a monthly donation target, and if it isn't met... we close down for that month. :P

EDIT: XMT, for you... £100, direct to my paypal. :P
