Name changes aren't allowed. It causes too much confusion.

Tural wrote:Name changes are unnecessary and confusing in almost all situations, including this one. Say I wanted to find a post by Cobain, I have it in my memory that it's by Cobain. Cobain's name is changed on a whim and now I can't find any posts by him, because he has a new name, sig, and avatar. There is no way for a user to find this person, because their name was changed to something obscure for seemingly no reason. If you want a name changed, you can make a new account like that. It helps avoid confusion, and yes, it is an issue if anyone is permitted to change their name at any time, as would be the case here, and it isn't trivial. There's a reason the policy has been the way it is. No matter, though, I'm sure an admin will step in here and change it anyways, to please one person and burden the rest, despite there being no legitimate cause.
Tural wrote:And what about people who need to find posts by you, but can't? And the staff members who keep records on users, who now have to recognize that your name has been changed? Everyone else on the site has to adapt to the name change. What you want impacts potentially negatively affects everyone else on the site. If you had emblems, you wouldn't have them on a new account, but you chose the name you registered, and you should not expect an admin to be willing change it when you registered, especially when the policy has been this way for years. You made the decision of that name, you're not entitled to a name change whenever you want. If you want a new name, you can be responsible for that with the new account. It's the price you pay for making that decision. The admins are not required to change your name, regardless of your post count or emblems. You want a new name, you can decide if it's worth it or not. You can take some responsibility in the situation, not expect it to be handed to you with no care as to the consequences of the change.

I really don't care. What do you want your name to be?

Hopefully "Necessary."
This case is acceptable namely because the member has a very low amount of posts. But again, constant, easy name changes for everyone who wants them is a horrible idea. Throwing that out there before you set a precedent.

I agree with pretty much every point Tural makes on the matter. Perhaps we'll make a threshold post-limit, after which users cannot request a name change. Unless it's a change of letter capitalisation or something trivial, that won't affect the userbase when identifying the person in question, or when searching for them.
