...so many people think Halo 3 looks the same as or only marginally better than Halo 2.

Halo 3 isn't massive leaps and bounds beyond its predecessor, true, but it certainly isn't as bad as some people say, and I think they perceive this because they play on SDTVs. Though I wouldn't ordinarily think that would change much, I remember back when my brother and I played Oblivion that there was a phenominal difference, primarily because you couldn't see the intricate beauty of the game's lighting effects: the game looked like Morrowind 1.5 in 480i. HD was another matter, however.

What do you guys think? *EDIT* Post whether you use an SD or HD TV as well.

you can't really compare halo and gears because gears is more like metal gear solid style graphics than a halo kind.
i think halo 3 beta looks a bit better than halo 2 but isnt as big a leap as i had hoped.

I played on a Standard Defintion TV and it looked nice, then I played on a big screen Standard and it looked even more kick ass. THEN I played on a High Def and it looked incredibly awesome. (Mixed with Surround Sound, it kicks so much ass!!!!!)

The graphics will look better in the future. And even Bungie said last November (I believe in a 1up podcast) that Halo 3 wont look as good as gears does (multiplayer wise). Halo 3 has a sci-fi look and feel. GoW is trying to look real. Halo 3 has more action going on, like more grenades flying, larger maps, more players in game, and so on. GoW doesn't, so to compensate for that, their graphics are amazing.

To say that all people, or even the majority of people who bitch about graphics are doing so because they play in SD is completely inaccurate.

I don't think Halo3 beta is in high def at all... i played on my friends 53" 1080i widescreen and it didn't look any better than on my flatscreen 27" SDTV

I phrased my comment in a way that misconstrued the meaning.
What I mean to say is that people who legitimately criticize the graphics are people who probably aren't playing on SD. People playing on SD would be more accepting of the so called "lackluster" graphics. The people who truely are upset about graphics are, aside from being just generally dumb, probably playing in HD, and thus expect better quality.

Personally, I wouldn't care if it used the Halo 2 graphics. I play the game for the game, not the graphics.

And so far, the gameplay in this is amazing.

There walks/types a real man. The graphics really don't matter as long as the game plays well, and from what I hear, it plays really well. If these people prefer a game with good graphics even if it plays horribly, they can, but they should remember what they said about better, if older-looking games when they're off not having fun in life-like high definition.

Well, its just like Goldeneye. Graphics are horrible (good for their time i guess) and I still love playing it.

Gameplay is always the majority, but graphics are a plus

Meh, never was impressed with Halo's graphics (Halo 2+, Original was different). I feel like i'm playing in a wax museum with an artist that used clay...

I'm a big graphics whore, so they mean a lot to me. So far I'm not amazingly impressed, but not disappointed by all means. Also I tend to find that HD allows you to pick the flaws easier then SD, but that may just be me.

Im actually very dissapointed. Mb the game will change that alot for me. And I think Im not the only one. Because most of my friends will play the beta for 1-2hrs and then go play GoW or Guitar Hero 2 or even go back to halo 2 for the rest of the day.

You're not the only one...However I must say you would be a fool to "go back to halo 2"...Why? because firstly, the game is slower, less balanced and of course has worse graphics than the halo 3 beta. Honestly, unless you're going back to halo 2 to up your rank, or play for the diversity of the maps, I see no reason to go back to it...Especially if its just for the graphics...

I know that the xbox 360 introduced Hi definition gaming and made it mainstream for users (yes pc games have had "HD" content for years), but I think not playing a game simply because it doesn't look as pretty or as next gen as you'd have hoped is just plain stupid! The expectations from all you young people astounds me. Instead of being all "thank you for hosting such an awesome beta for us bungie, and for managing to have such a solid multiplayer system up and running at this stage for us to give feedback on, especially considering no other console developer has ever done such a thing before. It also shows how much you value you're customers and their feedback and I appreciate you listening to me and I hope you can make a great game from it" its "omg IT DOESNT LOOK LIKE I WANT IT TO! I DONT LIKE IT", do us a favour and go play Gears of war then and leave the other people who like the game and bungie alone.

Note: this isn't all against you mr exile, this is essentially a rant against everyone who's nay sayed against the graphics that I've read, and believe me, there have been heaps of people who have said the same thing...Its gotten to a point where Bungie forum staff are threatening to lock each and every graphics thread because its all full of the same silly little 14 year olds demanding insane graphics over fast and fluid gameplay.

i care about graphics to a certain extent...that extent doens't go far. Atleast better then 1st gen xbox =P. But gameplay>graphics.
