How to boost performance on poor laptops.

Post by adolif »

Ok, I once played all my halo1 on a 6-year-old Dell. It has the suckiest graphics, but at the time I wasn't exposed to otherwise. So I get a new laptop, and I see the average graphics of an Nvidia graphics card, and I thought they were the greatest graphics in the world because of what I used to know from my Dell. Halo 2 Vista comes out, and because of how great I think my graphics are, I buy it.
I Install it, and I get really sucky graphics with a choppy framerate. I discovered the truth. My graphics are not as bad as my Dell but still suck.
I have been on a long campaign to figure out how to run Halo 2 Vista on a 640x480 resolution.

For anybody who has a story similar to this: Here is a short tutorial on how to do it.

Halo 2 doesn't allow the 640x480 resolution. Halo 2 controls the resolution in fullscreen mode. In Windowed mode, however, Windows Vista does.

Step 1:
Go into Halo 2 and in video settings, set Halo 2 in Windowed Mode.
Step 2:
Exit Halo 2 and right click it and go to properties.
Go to the compatibility mode tab.
DO NOT RUN IT IN COMPATIBILITY MODE. (why is this caps lock if it is obvious? I don't know.)
Check the checkbox:
Run In 640x480 Screen Resolution.

Done!

It improves performance A TON and gets rid of choppy framerates and smoothens video. It is that easy. No extra hardware. ;)

This is very useful for sucky laptops. People with desktop pc's with some of the greatest hardware in the world SHOULD be bored reading this.

Why do you ask? I really hope it's not to make a flame because of my hardware.

Lol. For a flame. This thing can't even run HaloPC full speed.

Anyways. If I ever bother to install Vista on this, or find some "Halo2Vista for XP" thingymajig, I'm sure this'll be the first thing I try... if it will run at all.

that would be the end effect when you change the screen resolution in an os, the screen resolution changes

EDIT: great job adolif for finding this out

actually....yes. it is. it won't support 640x480 in the window itself, but in windowed mode the graphics card is working with the windows vista resolution rather than halo 2's, boosting performance if you lower windows vista's resolution, even if you keep halo 2's higher. just constantly keep your control panel open and don't close it but minimize it, if you have a problem with automaticly reverting back to normal, like me, everytime you close halo 2.

Heh, nifty. My laptop sounds similar to yours. It has a fair graphics card that handles Halo 2 pretty well, but my processor has a hard time keeping up sometimes.

instead of posting something barely readable jackson just try it. No one can tell yo uthat unless you gives specs and everything and its quicker for you to test it.

Why, why, WHY!!!

Jackson, I have seen you bump countless dead topics at least like ten times. Once again, LOOK AT THE POST DATE, AND READ THE POSTS BEFORE YOU MAKE A POST!

I'm getting really sick of this. This "bumping spree" needs to end. NOW.
