few months back.
i think live got scrapped because of too many complaints and the epic flop that h2v turned out to be.

There's the link. The switchover didn't happen but two or three weeks ago.

It was due to the pressures from Steam, or so I hear.

It doesn't have to do anything with Microsoft...
Steam is far better, and much more popular than Windows Live is; not to mention, it's free. Microsoft knew that, and decided to give it out for free in hopes that Windows Live would become more popular.
