It may be because it is just imported very small. That is what happens with the plugin i use for max. Just select the "invisible" object and scale it. Hope that helps.
If i wanted to render a hog, which .obj files would i need to import? There are 160, and some are of the warthog broken etc

i know people have already asked this, but once importing a model into max, how do you get it to keep the uvws intact and textured, because whatever i do i only get a plain model.

Don't ask for .xbe files here, as that is illegal. NMP can be used on PAL with patches. Look for a sticky in the PAL or NMP sections on files.halomods.com
