sapein shuts down after radiosity_start

ok..well, before my sky was black, then it turned purple..guess what? now the sky appears!!!

so i type in radiosity_quality 0
radiosity_start

and sapien closes. right when i hit enter after radiosity_start, the program just SHUTS DOWN. anyone know whats wrong?

ok, heres what i did. i created my refrence frame, my skybox. i did a stl check, no errors.

i created a simple plane. no hills, no edge-modifying, no nothing. i did an stl check-14 open edges. how do you get 14 open edges from a plane?

ok, a really quick question. is there some kinda plugin/utility for 3ds max that allows it to import gmax files(.gmax)?

oh yeah,and i have another question. how do you find out how many polygons/triangles are in your map?
