Layer styles are useful when they are used correctly, but I'd stay away from the bevel / emboss effect for the most part until you have more experience with it. the image you have of standoff is LDR, i guarentee it. And All HDR should be 32 bits, no matter what... 24bit is the most easily obtainable from three bracketed exposures and easily suffices in 3D rendering.
